- "The following work originated with an act of the General Assembly of Kentucky, passed in the year 1801, entitled 'An act directing the mode of revising the criminal common law, and providing for the appointment of revisors.' This act after stating that the criminal laws are so complex in their present state, that it is impossible for the people who are governed by them to read or understand them, enacted, that two revisors should be appointed, who should collect from the English reporters, and such other writers on the criminal law as they may think proper, whatever is applicable to the present existing criminal laws of this state. ... It is hoped that this volume will be found to contain a plain and accurate representation of the different points which have been settled on many important questions of criminal law ... "--p. [ix]-xi
