"A quasi-facsimile of the ... Codex Sinaiticus" (D. & M.): i.e. of a 4th century MS. of the Greek Bible (of which the surviving leaves contain parts of the Septuagint O.T. and the whole N.T., with the Epistle of Barnabas and part of the Shepherd of Hermas). This had been found by Tischendorf at the Monastery of St Catherine on Mount Sinai and presented by him with the monks' permission to Tsar Alexander II; this facsimile was "published at St. Petersburg, at the expense of the Tsar Alexander II. ... on the thousandth anniversary of the foundation of the Russian Empire" (D. & M.)
