- Summary
- Rev. Dr. Frances Taylor Gench, Professor of New Testament at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va. and an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), delivers the second of four lectures on new developments in the field of biblical studies that bear significant implications for the teaching ministry of the church. Thursday morning plenary: Dramatic shifts are taking place in our understanding of first-century Judaism, but teaching and preaching have not caught up with recent scholarship. As a result, inaccurate portrayals of Jews who appear in the biblical text continue to be propagated. The speaker considers new perspectives on ancient Judaism that debunk prevailing generalizations, and ways in which Christian educators can foster a deeper understanding of our Jewish kin, so that we might overcome the "teaching of contempt" that has so often characterized Christian perceptions of Judaism
