- Summary
- These eleven lectures are the fourth of a six-part series which traces the progress of the Western mind in grappling with the fundamental questions that determine our stance toward being. They show the consequences of the scientific revolution in our understanding of ourselves and the many problems it raises. As the predictive and productive powers of science make it seem the final resting place of human reason, much of philosophy argues for the application of the scientific method to regions where it had not before been tested. Comte founds sociology and Sumner applies the Darwinian insight to the structure of society. It includes Hegel's thought and its evolution into Marxism, and lectures on Freud, Kierkegaard, Darwin, and sociologist Max Weber, establishing the bedrock on which most modern understanding and criticism of society is based
