- Summary
- In the summer of 2006, as the Iranian-backed Hezbollah fought off Israelis in Lebanon and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faced down President George Bush at the United Nations, a bus full of Iranian pilgrims left Tehran on a journey to the holy city of Karbala, deep inside a shattered Iraq. "Pilgrimage To Karbala" follows this intense 5-day journey into the heartlands of Shia Islam, revealing many of the attitudes, beliefs, and emotions that add to the complexity of modern Islam. The odyssey takes on spiritual and historical dimensions as each traveler recalls past anxieties and dangers - having lived through Iran's 1979 revolution and its war with Iraq - and each marvels at the chance to experience the longed-for Karbala pilgrimage, impossible during Saddam Hussein's rule. The film reveals how two ancient crimes – the murder of Muhammad’ s grandson and the disappearance of a six-year-old imam – became the founding legends of Shiism and increasingly dominate events and attitudes in the Middle East today. Anchor Daljit Dhaliwal talks with Dr. Vali Nasr, Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Council of Foreign Relations and author of The Shia Revival: How Conflicts Within Islam Will Shape the Future
