- Summary
- "Pope John Paul II's encyclical Laborem exercens is a significant new development in the Catholic Church's teaching on social questions. Issued in September of 1981, the papal document argues that the present capitalist system in the Western world can no longer provide people with the basic requirements of their existence, that what is needed is a planned economy based on Christian socialist principles and international cooperation. In his detailed commentary, Gregory Baum states that the encyclical is a dramatic "shift to the left" in Catholic social thought. He traces the origins of the letter to Emmanuel Mounier, the 20th century French personalist philosopher, and to certain aspects of Marxism. The central idea of this historic encyclical is the priority of labor over capital: the belief that capital is meant to serve labor, which means it must serve those who make up the labor force. Written against a background of the Polish labor stuggle, and pointing to an industrial and economic revolution in the West, the encyclical and this incisive commentary is a valuable resource for all citizens." -- back cover
